The Blair Ostrich Project

In SWOT-vac (reading/studying week before exams) we (Jana, Kim, Larissa and me) decided to go to Tasmania. As we're exchange students, we obviously need less time to study, right...? We did a roundtrip over the whole island, totalling over 1700km (of which I voluntarily drove about 1400, such amazing roads to drive, especially with the car we had!). I'll give a quick overview of what we did and then it's picture time :) It was amazing, I love Tasmania!

Day 1: arrival in Hobart, spent the evening in the hostel (we arrived very late)

Day 2: drove from Hobart to Strahan (solid 5 hours of driving), visited Mt. Field national park, Russel Falls, an ancient forest and lake Saint Clair.

Day 3: drove to Devonport, went to Cradle mountain National Park (awesome!) and spent the night in an Irish Pub.

Day 4: drove to St. Helens and spent the afternoon in the Bay of Fires.

Day 5: drove to Freycinet National Park and went to Wineglass Bay. Me and Larissa climbed Mt. Amos after the park ranger told us that it's not too difficult to do (apparently only old people complain about it), but damn it was tough! It was slippery, steep and scary, but after some point we didn't want to turn around anymore so we just kept on going. The view and sense of achievement were definitely worth it though!

Day 6: we went to the Zoodoo zoo in Richmond. It was amazing! They had baby white lions, so cute! Furthermore, we hand-fed wallabies, kangaroos and emus and even some ostriches (those big birds make me laugh every time I see them, so I was more than happy that morning). After that, we did a safari in which we got into the emu/ostrich area. Me, the girls and a class of primary school children. I never laughed so hard as when the birds came to us for food. During this safari, The Blair Ostrich Project was filmed, which will explain its name once you've seen it. It's right at the bottom!

In the afternoon, we went to Port Arthur, a small town and former convict settlement. In the evening, we did a ghost tour (on Halloween...) apparently, Port Arthur is one of the most haunted places in Australia. To be honest, the whole tour really got on my nerves and I didn't enjoy it, even though we didn't see any ghosts!

Day 7: In the morning we went to the Nant whisky distillery, where we got a tour. This was really amazing to see, and it's awesome that they make such a good whisky after existing for such a short time. We tried all of the whiskies they make, and I really enjoyed them (it'll take some time and money before I taste it again...). In the afternoon, we went to the Mona museum in Hobart, a museum for modern arts. As such, I didn't understand most of it, but it was a really amazing place, definitely worth the visit!

Enough talk, time for pictures!

So, with one week left I'll be rounding up things up in Melbourne for the next 1,5 week. 3 exams left, saying goodbyes (not looking forward to that...) and packing up for travelling! I hope to be able to update my blog once I'm in Sydney, and then again once I'm back in Melbourne to update on New Zealand.
